Brutes Rule the Roads

December 5, 2007 / by ajay890

Welcome to dusty, noisy and scary stretch of 15Kms from Usgao to Molem on NH 17 (Panaji, Goa - Belgaum Highway). Try riding/driving along this stretch and get a feel of near Death Experience while trying to stay on the road as the iron ore transporting tipper trucks zoom past you. (It’s and ideal spot for AXN TV’s FEAR FACTOR challenge)

Trucks Eclipsing The Rising Sun

These brute truckers ply from the mines in this area to Mandovi river, transporting the iron ore. The drivers driving these trucks have no regards for any other vehicle, I must have some guts to ride on my bicycle on this stretch.

Trucks waiting at the Mine Entrance
On 3rd December 2007 I rode from Ponda to Molem (where Bhagvan Mahavir National park is situated). The experience left me completely shaken. I rode on the rode side dirt track all through those 15 Kms.

The trucks raced against each other honking continuously and throwing up clouds of dust. By the time I reached Molem I was covered in dust and my eyes were watering badly. It was a great relief to enter contrasting world of trees and birds in the sanctuary .

NH 17

I had started off at 6.10am and reached the sanctuary entrance at 7.40am after riding 28 Kms. I spent one hour relaxing and preparing myself to take the same deadly route back.
